OpenRa Command & Conquer

This is an open source rewriting of the game Command & Conquer: Red Alert. The original game came out in 1996 and produced by Westwood Studios. The game takes place in the alternate early history of Command & Conquer when Allied Forces battle an aggressive Soviet Union for control over the European mainland.

As you can see, the main menu is really simple and as an opensource game, the community has the possibility to improve the game. I decided to create a new version of the menu to add a new aspect to it and give the possibility to the player to interact easily with the devs and other players.

The target audience

It's an old game and the genre has become more and more popular over the years. So, I wanted to adapt the game for the same people who played the game when it came out in 1996. For that, I needed a simple menu, with easy acces to videos and social media to learn more about the game because those people don't have enough time to learn again all the mechanics of the game.

For example:

Yves Swanson is 35 years old, has 2 kids and has a full time job. He likes watching videos of his favorite games but he doesn't have time to play a lot. When he was younger, he played the original Command & Conquer and now wants to play it again but he also wants to create contents for the game. What he is looking for is the same game he played years ago, but with easy access to it and an active community so he can create and share his creations with others.

My goals

My goals are to implement new functions in the menu, to make it better for my target audience.

I decided to add direct links to social media, forums and videos created by the community so the players who don't have too much time to spend on the game can learn more about the game and the mechanics without playing it a lot. I also wanted to add a space where the devs could leave messages for the players to keep them informed about the new updates and things that are coming into the game in the near-future.
